Your safari begins with pickup from your Zanzibar hotel and transfer to Zanzibar Airport for your scheduled domestic flight to Arusha.

The main advantage of this route is not simply the number of parks. It is the contrast between them.

Tarangire introduces you to baobab landscapes, the Tarangire River ecosystem and wildlife including elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeest and predators.

Serengeti gives you access to expansive plains, resident wildlife and some of Tanzania's strongest opportunities for seeing lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators.

Ngorongoro Crater provides a very different safari environment, with wildlife concentrated across grassland, woodland, wetland and lake habitats on the crater floor.

The trade-off is important: this itinerary covers more ecosystems, but it does not give you a completely uninterrupted full day inside the Serengeti. Travellers who value Serengeti depth over park variety should consider the Serengeti-focused alternatives above.

Flights from Zanzibar to Northern Tanzania

The recommended itinerary normally uses a scheduled flight between Zanzibar and Arusha, followed by the private ground safari.

Current airline schedules show that Zanzibar–Arusha services can be operated as scheduled domestic flights, but routing and departure times vary by airline and travel date. Baggage limits also vary by airline. For example, current published policies differ between Flightlink, Auric Air and Miracle Air, so a universal “15 kg” rule is no longer accurate across all possible operating carriers. The most important thing to understand about this particular four-day route is that it prioritizes three different safari areas, not maximum uninterrupted Serengeti time.

Day 1 is partly flight-dependent. After arriving in Arusha and driving toward Tarangire, the remaining part of the day is used for your first game drive.

Day 2 is the longest transfer day. The journey toward Serengeti takes several hours, although wildlife viewing begins as you enter the protected areas and continues during the afternoon.

Day 3 provides your strongest Serengeti-focused game-drive period before travelling toward Ngorongoro.

Day 4 combines the Ngorongoro Crater safari with the road transfer and scheduled return flight to Zanzibar.

This is why the recommended itinerary is strongest for wildlife and ecosystem variety.

Can You See the Great Migration?

Possibly, but the recommended Tarangire–Serengeti–Ngorongoro route should not be presented as a dedicated migration safari.

The Great Migration moves through different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem according to rainfall, grazing conditions and natural herd movement.
