Plan your trip to Nyerere National Park (Selous)

Nyerere National Park Tanzania Safaris

Previously known as Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is the largest game reserve in Tanzania, encompassing around 50,000 km². Originally established as a protected area in 1896, Selous became a hunting reserve in 1905, catering to those interested in hunting excursions. Named after British adventurer Fredrick Nyerere, who passed away during World War I, the park was created when British colonialists combined smaller reserves into the current Nyerere National Park.

Nyerere National Park remains one of Tanzania's least frequented destinations, making it an ideal spot for tourists seeking to experience the Big Five without throngs of visitors. The park boasts a variety of vegetation, particularly the renowned Miombo woodlands, an abundance of wildlife, and over 400 bird species that can be observed in their natural environments.

It is one of the few locations in Tanzania where visitors can enjoy both game drives and boat rides. While the national park is considered very safe for safaris, it's important to adhere to all the guidelines provided by the tour guides. You can choose to spend as many days as you wish in the park, depending on your budget, and you have the option to combine your safari to Nyerere with other destinations in the country.
